What Experts Say About Sports Turf and Performance

Just a few decades ago, most professional sports were played on an “au naturale” surface. No, we’re not referring to the players, but to the surface -- from baseball to football, the majority of sports were played on trimmed and well-maintained natural grass.

Today, things are very different. A huge range of sports teams, from top NFL teams to popular field hockey teams, play their games on synthetic turf. Many of the world’s most acclaimed and stadiums have made a permanent switch to sports turf, usually with fantastic results.

To most people, the key advantages of sports turf are practical -- it’s easier to care for, requires less maintenance and takes the randomness of natural materials out of sports. But it also has a range of benefits for players, from simplifying play to improving sports performance.

Below, we’ve shared some quotes and data from industry experts about the sports performance benefits of artificial turf. We’ve also looked at a range of data points to find out just how much of an impact sports turf can have on performance as a playing surface.

Sports Turf Helps Improve the Safety of Sports

Developed in the 1960s, artificial turf first entered the world of professional sports when it was installed at the Houston Astrodome in 1966. Today, it’s used by thousands of athletic teams in the United States alone, plus tens of thousands more internationally.

One of the biggest benefits of sports turf is that it improves the safety of sports. Games played on artificial turf surfaces tend to produce fewer injuries than games played on natural grass -- a reality that’s made turf a favorite not just of stadium owners, but of team coaches and doctors.

Part of the injury-prevention benefit of artificial turf is its padded texture. Modern artificial turf is designed using an interior “infill,” which uses a combination of drainage layer, artificial fibers and shock-absorbing pads to make impacts less intense.

This is explained in more detail in ASME’s excellent write up-on the safety benefits of modern sports turf surfaces.

The end result is a surface that’s comfortable and supportive for players, allowing for fast, agile movement, yet less harsh than natural grass. This means that when players are tackled or fall, their risk of sustaining a concussion or severe bodily injury is significantly lower.

Sports Turf Allows for Faster, More Exciting Action

The second advantage of sports turf is that it allows for faster, more agile movement, allowing for more exciting games and more precise movements from players.

In a study of 40-yard dash speed from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, turf and natural grass both produced similar times as Division II college football players completed 40-yard timed dashes.

The players averaged 5.33 seconds on natural grass and 5.34 seconds on turf -- times that are almost identical.

But when it came to agility, turf moved ahead of its natural competitor. The athletes achieved times of 4.49 seconds for the proagility shuffle on artificial turf; on natural grass, the average time was a significantly slower 4.64 seconds.

Graydon L. Gains, the lead researcher of the study, noted that the increase in dash speed is a significant improvement, stating that the turf represented “a 3.0 percent faster agility time” than natural grass.

How Do I Keep My Artificial Grass from Turning into a Heat Zone?

Artificial Grass Heat Zone

How Do I Keep My Artificial Grass from Turning into a Heat Zone?

There’s no point denying that synthetic grass can (and will) get really hot when exposed to extreme heat.

It’s also a fact that this seemingly small inconvenience is a lot more frustrating than it sounds because hey, let’s admit it, the last thing you want on a bright, beautiful, and warm sunny day is red-hot artificial turf to sit on. But have you ever considered that maybe you don’t really have to deal with this nuisance after all?

Here at MegaGrass, our mission is to give you back more of your time, and take the work and worry away from your landscaping needs. There’s nothing we want more than to be able to provide you with the best experience humanly possible. We are constantly on the lookout for the best synthetic turf technology in order to cater to your specific needs. Even though our turf can withstand 176 oF and our blades are designed to deflect light and promote air circulation on artificial grass, there’s always room for improvement.

Today, we’re happy to offer another innovative solution to keep your turf from turning into a scorching desert come summertime.

 Introducing ToCool Evaporative Cooling Technology

The ToCool synthetic turf cooling system can lower your turf’s temperature down by 50oF even during warm summer months. It’s perfect for artificial lawns that aim to provide unparalleled comfort not available anywhere else.

How Does ToCool Work?

ToCool synthetic turf solution works on the evaporative cooling principle – in terms we can understand - it helps to store moisture within the synthetic turf systems. When solar energy heats the turf, the evaporation process takes place. The solar energy, instead of heating the thermoplastic turf blades (aka Polyethylene, the primary material used to manufacture the fibers), is redirected to the water source, efficiently preventing the turf fibers’ temperature from going up.

Most common infill materials trap solar rays and heat the surface to 150-180 degrees. The ToCool eco-friendly, healthy, and cost-effective infill solution cools down synthetic turf by an applied principle of evaporative cooling. Testing has shown that the ToCool systems lower the surface temperature down by 30 to 50oF.

Equipped With Antibacterial Properties for Your Protection

ToCool also throws in the benefit of an antimicrobial additive, BacShield. What sets BacShield apart from other additives is its ability to not just clean the surface. BacShield is known to fight harmful microorganisms including bacteria, protozoans, viruses, and fungi such as mold and mildew.

Hundreds of volatile compounds of bacterial cultures produce a lot of smells, and mostly not ones we like. When these microbes come into contact with the turf surface, the antimicrobial agents penetrate its cell walls and disrupt key cell functions to limit microbial growth and reproduction.

ToCool Practical Applications

  • Backyard Weddings
  • Commercial Landscape
  • Concert Venues
  • Dog Runs
  • Parks and Recreational Spaces
  • Residential Landscape
  • Sports Fields (Equestrian, Golf Courses, Football Stadiums, etc)

How Hard is it to Apply ToCool?

Not at all! You can use a backpack sprayer for smaller applications, a tote-sprayer for medium to large applications, or a specialized automated “ride-on” equipment (available for sport-field applications) that will bring up the infill, coat it, and groom it back down.

Is ToCool a Good Investment?

Often, especially in pet turf applications, highly porous minerals are used to absorb ammonia. The problem is, these particles eventually reach their saturation point similar to what happens to cat litter. After reaching that point, the same minerals will not be able to do what it was intended to any longer.

This is where T°Cool with BacShield sets itself apart from other turfs in the market. With T° Cool, you no longer have to worry about offensive odors nor do you need to replace infill.  Re-application is only required every 3 to 4 years, efficiently conserving your valuable resources, time, and energy.

For more than a decade we’ve been serving technologically advanced products with higher melting points to our friends in hot places, weather and waterproof varieties to our families with four seasons, maximum permeability for puppies both big and small, and a competitive 25-year lush-life guarantee for everyone under the sun.

To make it even more convenient for you, we have 11 locations all over the United States ready to serve your needs. With a large collection of roughly 1500 custom sizes per grass product, we can easily address your specific requests.

ToCool Sounds Like a Great Product, But What About the Price?

MegaGrass prices depend on a lot of factors such as quantity, size, type, etc. If you wish to learn more about artificial lawn costs, click on this link to compare lawn products.

One Last Thing

Please note that T°Cool™ Needs a Water Source. This technology stores moisture while the synthetic turf is being watered. As the temperature increases, the moisture is slowly released -- cooling the synthetic turf surface through natural evaporation. T°Cool™ works best in the summer months when the sun is at its hottest.  As more heat is absorbed the more the cooling effect is released. A ¼” watering tool can keep the turf cool for several days depending on various conditions.

If you have questions about any of our products, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team. You may also leave us your contact number to request a callback.

We at MegaGrass believe that grass is more than the thing at your feet: it's parties, playdates, and moments. We are glad to be a part of your daily life and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to demonstrate to you our communal vision for a brighter, more sustainable future while spending more time with the ones we love

Let us know how else we can make your life better. We look forward to talking to you.

Steal These Refreshing Synthetic Turf Trends for your Office Space

Up the walls, across your tables, and under your feet - designers are coming up with unexpected ways to brighten workspaces with synthetic turf

Throughout the years our species has become more and more cooped up within the boundaries of walls. Subways, apartments, office spaces… there are days where we barely get a taste of nature because of the current demands of our survival. The most innovative designers are seeking a solution to reconnect humans to the soothing effects of nature, by integrating synthetic turf into the places where we spend the most time - office spaces - across the country and beyond.

Centro, Chicago

In the Chicago offices of Centro, Partners by Design found a way to bring the outdoors in by creating ‘parks’ to break up the monotony in the digital advertising company’s space. They juxtapose synthetic turf against clean, softly-shaped chrome and leather fixtures to create harmony between the ‘natural’ and crafted.

ECommPay, the payment solutions provider based in Latvia, commissioned Katz Interiors to harness nature’s balancing powers, softening the hard edges of their modern, geometric space. Scattering artificial ‘living walls’ in the most unexpected intimate settings, and mounting floor to ceiling (and wall to wall) soundproof call rooms, accomplish the goal.

Online mobile marketing tech company, Tune, has an office as eclectic as the company itself. Crushed blue velvet sofas, glass dividing walls, exposed brick and their very own grown-up playground, complete with functional chair swings in their communal workspace. In what can be a very demanding industry, designer Miranda Lee Morgan sprinkles opportunities for fun throughout the office. It’s not uncommon to be inched in the hallway by Crazy Carts driving past the indoor putting green. Truly a space that caters to the wellbeing of its employees.

The outdoors redesigned - that’s definitely the feeling as you walk past a tidy forest of vertical wood panels, triangle green seating in the common room, and zigzag glass tiles mimicking peaks, valleys, and water in one fell swoop. From the imaginations of ThirdWay Interiors, space uses artificial grass in a typical setting - outdoors under tables and chairs. But the experience of the space altogether contributes to Merkle/Peiscopix’ goal of an environmentally friendly space that promotes productivity.

The ROI of an office space that caters to optimizing productivity and mental well-being of the people within it, is invaluable. It’s the reason why large, demanding companies like Google, YouTube and Amazon invest millions of dollars in the spaces where they expect employees to spend most of their time in. They are changing the mindset of ‘needing’ to be at work to ‘wanting’ - and it’s a strategy that clearly works.
