In simple terms, climate change is causing unforeseen changes in weather patterns. These changes lead to a difference in the period of rainy days there are in a given time frame. For example, if we experience a week of rain in July this year, that could change to just five days in the next year due to climate change.

 

How does drought conditions affect people?

The current drought being experienced in the Southwest United States is not even comparable to what’s expected to come. In the later years of the century, a megadrought will be experienced throughout the region and the central Plains. This can possibly drive out people from those areas leading to an economic crisis.

 

In 35 years, if climate change continues at its current rate, the said areas will experience a shift in weather. That swing will last approximately three decades. During megadroughts, there will be harsh impacts on megacities, populations, and water availability. Lack of water can lead to so many health problems, not just famine, but also sanitation issues and pollution.

 

Cornell University, Columbia University, and NASA researchers forewarned major water shortages and problems that could lead to drying out vegetation. This, in turn, will lead to “monster” wildfires in southern Arizona and parts of California. These are all the results of climate change and its unnatural acceleration throughout the years.

 

Water Consumption

 

An average American consumes a maximum of 200 gallons of water per day. Taking baths, flushing down the toilet, brushing teeth, cooking, and drinking all consume water. 30% of the daily consumption is used on outdoor activities, like cleaning the car, mowing the lawn, and gardening. This leads to the conclusion that 60 gallons of water are used outside by a single person, every single day. If we multiply that to the millions of people in the United States, we get more or less about 9 billion gallons of water.

Irrigation systems for lawns are problematic for having leaks. Installed underground sprinklers are turned on regularly and they go unnoticed when leaking. According to the EPA, an irrigation system with a leak of 1/32nd of an inch in diameter (about the thickness of a dime) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month.

 

Let us clarify that, a hole with the thickness of a dime, not the diameter of a dime, can cause that much water to leak in a month! If 1 CCF (100 cubic feet / 748 gallons) of water in California costs $3.88, that would amount to at least $30 a month on a tiny leak. That’s how much water your irrigation system is wasting, and how much money you’re paying… for nothing.

 

The Environmental Protection Agency EPA finds that leaks “can waste more than 1 trillion gallons per year nationwide. That’s equal to the annual household use of more than 11 million homes.” These leaks go unnoticed because a few drops of water don’t seem like a big deal on the outset. However, counting millions of households with leaky pipes and faulty water sources, leaks cause an average of about 2.7 billion gallons. That’s 2.7 billion gallons of water wasted in the United States of America because of leakage and poor plumbing.

Is it, really? To understand this, we must first dig into the composition of artificial turf.

 

What is artificial grass made of?

Most artificial turfs are made of polyethylene. It’s the kind of plastic used to make children’s toys, grocery bags, and even bullet-proof vests. Polypropylene is also in the mix. This is commonly used for plastic utensils and microwavable containers. Nylon is also used for heat resistance.

 

Are these the materials that make artificial grass dangerous?

No.

 

An article from The Washington Post written by Stuart Shalat, an Environmental Health Professor, discusses this topic. And we’re more than happy to give you his insights for your reference.

 

Shalat says, “Based on studies I have reviewed and conducted, I believe there is a potential health risk because of the chemicals in tires, which are recycled into crumbs to support the plastic blades of synthetic grass.”

 

What is artificial turf made up of?

 

As Shalat talks through, “Artificial turf is made up of three major parts:

 

1. Backing material that will serve to hold the individual blades of artificial grass

2. The plastic blades themselves.

3. The infill, those tiny black crumbs, that helps support the blades.”.

 

What makes them harmful?

Shalat points out, “Various pigments are used to provide the green color of the blades. These can include lead or titanium for the white lines and still other metals for school logos on the field.

 

Those little black crumbs are the problems. Tires can be toxic.”

 

Is artificial turf safe for kids?

 

Yes, definitely! Crumb rubber made from the ground up recycled tires are the culprits that make artificial grass unsafe. These are the properties that give artificial grass such a bad reputation. The good news is: putting infill is optional. Also, there are no natural alternatives to it like crushed rocks. Artificial turf with toxic amounts of lead has also been discontinued by turf manufacturers. We’ll discuss these more in-depth in the later paragraphs.

 

What’s important now is that you know that generally, the artificial grass blades are safe for your kids. You can definitely have artificial turf at home without crumb rubber endangering your lives. Studies show no conclusive evidence linking fake grass to cancer. But why is there even such a discussion? What led people to believe that artificial grass can cause cancer?

 

Amy Griffin, associate head coach at the University of Washington, has worked with students for 24 years. In her speech, she described her experience with students and artificial turf.

 

She made a list of athletes who were diagnosed of cancer, and as of February 2019, that list has 260 names. 119 of them are goalkeepers. She says that since the beginning, goalies were always at 59-61% of the victims. It is thought that because goalkeepers are more in contact with the grass (they dive and slam their bodies on the turf) they are more prone to cancer.

 

Griffin acknowledges that “correlation is different from causation.” But, according to her list, the incidents of cancer rose as more playing fields of natural grass were changed to artificial turf fields (with crumb rubber infill.) This is the same rubber from the ground up recycled tires.

 

Griffin says that the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is in charge of keeping residents of the United States safe from environmental factors. They’re the ones who said that rubber tires are toxic. People can’t throw them out, can’t bury them, can’t burn them either. It’s illegal.

 

The government taxed the tires so it can afford to safely collect them. They have to get the tires out of the environment to make sure that people won’t do anything stupid with them. But it soon became a problem for the places collecting these tires. They became overflowing with the stuff. They had no place to put the unsafe, toxic, dangerous wheels. They ended up sponsoring the growth of crumb rubber to solve the waste problem. The government subsidized communities using crumb rubber fields.

 

In 2014, the state of California used $6.1 million to “help” parks and recreational facilities using these crumb rubbers. It allegedly helped both their waste problem and the community. Or so they thought. They ground up recycled tires and broke them into millions of pieces, introduced them into our communities so the kids can play on trash

 

She continues to discuss the RCRA law (The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.) It is the law in charge of reducing the amount of waste generated and waste management. This law regulates toxic waste, but not its by-products. In turning tires into crumb rubber, different regulations apply.

 

Unfortunately, since these crumb rubbers when used as infill, get carried by waters to rivers, lakes, and coasts. They disappear into waterways, thus their disposal is not regulated. Not to mention the fact that these are so small that gushes of wind can definitely take portions of them. They get taken into the air—breathable by any human being in need of oxygen.

 

Don’t take their disposal into waterways lightly though! These crumb rubbers easily fit into mouths of fishes (that’s right! Fishes that we, human beings, eat!) and can potentially poison their aquatic environments. This poses a threat to all of us because if the water that we use every day is contaminated with toxic substances, we can definitely get sick. It may not always be cancer, but anything we do to plague the environment will definitely haunt us in some way.

 

What does crumb rubber infill have to do with cancer?

Hypothetically, these tiny pieces of rubber float in the air when the playing field is used by athletes. Much like dust resting on a book when you tap its cover, the dust spews into the air and into your lungs. Imagine a goalie diving to block a shot, rubber infill from underneath goes up in the air and into his face. He ingests them, or they stick to his skin. Since the rubbers are made from toxic materials, they negatively affect students and players on the field. No studies are yet to conclude this hypothesis. It’s only just that.

PAH = polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This is a group of chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil, and gasoline.

 

According to this, tire playgrounds and pavers have high levels of several toxic chemicals found in the recycled materials. In 2017, House Bill 6998 attempted to prohibit the installation of ground cover with shredded or ground rubber. Westport, Connecticut passed an ordinance prohibiting the use of synthetic infills on playing fields of town property. This was passed in late 2018.

It’s not! If anything, the recycled tire rubbers being used for infill are the main suspects. Tires come from a mix of synthetic and natural rubber, carbon black (a petroleum-based material) and 4-10 gallons of petroleum products. Metals like cadmium, lead (neurotoxic! It’s harmful to your brain!) and zinc are also present. Some chemicals like dibenzopyrenes are also known carcinogens.

 

Even the chemicals the tires are exposed to during its life can also have a hand in its toxicity. 11 out of 92 chemicals found within crumb rubber have been identified as known or suspected carcinogens. Having this in your yard is a sure fire way to poison yourself. The good news is: infill is completely separable from synthetic grass! You can choose sand and broken down rocks instead!

Marc Peter is a native New Yorker who spent 18 years in Kyoto, Japan. He then returned to the USA to design gardens and teach landscape architecture. He approached this specific landscape project with high respect for Japanese traditions relying on irregularity, simplicity, and poetic symbolism.

Terremoto founders David Godshall and Alain Peauroi believed that there was a growing need in California for landscaping that operated at a precise conceptual level. Their installations reflect the desire to bring more thought to the gardening business. They have a penchant for wild and messy gardens that are still inhabitable.

 

14. Natural Brutalism, Chile

 

There are times where the geography of a landscape is so dominant that the only way to beautify it is to work around it or within it. This was what designer Teresa Moller did when she created a footpath along the endlessly damp coastline of a 27-acre land between Zapallar and Papudo.

 

15. High Line, New York

 

 

Created on a former New York Central Railroad on the west side of Manhattan, the High Line is a 1.45 mile long elevated linear park, rail trail, and greenway. This abandoned spur was redesigned to become a “living system” that draws inspiration from multiple disciplines some of which include urban design, ecology, and architecture. The High Line has become a contemporary landscape architecture icon since opening to the public in 2009.

 

16. Ranelagh Gardens, Dublin 

 

The Ranelagh Gardens are public pleasure gardens located in Chelsea just outside of London. They were called as such because they occupied the site of Ranelagh House. It was built in 1688–89 by the Earl of Ranelagh and it was believed that he designed and built it himself. But the actual builder and owner was one Solomon Rieti, an Italian Jewish immigrant.

 

17. Brigit’s Garden, Ireland 

 

Brigit’s Garden is considered a sanctuary in the west of Ireland. It takes visitors on a magical journey into the very heart of Celtic heritage and mythology, easily making this a must-visit for tourists and locals alike. Set within 11 acres of wildflower meadows and native woodland, it is one of the most spectacular gardens in Ireland.

 

18. Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Dumfries 

 

The Garden of Cosmic Speculation is a 30-acre sculpture garden created by theorist and landscape architect Charles Jencks. The garden is inspired by modern cosmology, mathematics, and science. Sculptures and landscaping draw heavy inspiration from themes such as fractals and black holes. Although not as abundant with plants, it elegantly combines natural landscape with artificial symmetry and curves.

 

19. Great Dixter, England 

 

The Great Dixter is a house found in Northiam, East Sussex, England. Architect Edwin Lutyens combined an existing mid 15th-century house on the site from 1910-1912 with a similar structure brought from Benenden, Kent, and joined it together with his own additions. The garden is widely known for its one-of-a-kind tradition of sophisticated plantsmanship and is listed Grade 1 in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

 

20. Freedom Park, South Africa

 

This park is located on a 52-hectare site which also happens to be a vantage point offering visitors a panoramic view of the capital and beyond. The mandate of this park is the creation of a memorial and monument that will narrate a 3.6 billion year story following 7 epochs. The garden of memorial features a list of the names of those killed in the South African Wars, World War I, World War II as well as during the apartheid era.
